Katy & Fulshear residents can find authentic King Cakes locally from these exceptional bakers
By Claudia Richter
Each year after the winter holidays, the very festive and beloved King Cake shows up decked out in the classic Mardi Gras colors of green, gold and purple. The ring shape signifies a crown and the plastic baby inside signifies good luck and prosperity and puts the responsibility of the next party on the person that finds it. To many who grew up in and around Louisiana, it’s a welcome sight and tradition they have enjoyed since childhood. While some people swear by a specific bakery’s version, we are very lucky to have some phenomenal choices in the Katy and Fulshear areas that have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years and keep authentic King Cakes available locally.
FULSHEAR BAKERY
Lori Pope has done a masterful job creating a following of customers that rely on her for a variety of baked specialties and enjoys 5 star reviews and complimentary feedback for her high quality offerings. It is no surprise that last year alone she sold 650 King Cakes. Flavors include Cinnamon Sugar, Pecan Praline, Bourbon Pecan Pie, Raspberry, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Lemon.
Pope is also the only one in the area or anywhere for that matter, to accommodate customers with food allergies and sensitivities by offering gluten-free, dairy-free and Halal King Cakes that are not sacrificing in flavor. “My cakes are artisan,” she explains. “They are handmade, hand-rolled, and I use high quality ingredients. People drive from all over for my King Cakes, I have customers from The Woodlands, Spring, The Heights, and even Beaumont.” Although Pope operates out of her home in Fulshear, devotees will be pleased to know that she will be moving into her new facility at I-10 and Mason Road soon. Watch for details to come! I have personally tried a King Cake from the Fulshear Bakery and it was divine!

THE KING CAKE LADY
Doesn’t the name of this home baking business say it all? Kerri McCurdy is a Louisiana transplant that was honed and perfected her King Cakes over many years. The end result is a spectacular version that this writer tried and had a hard time limiting myself to just one piece. McCurdy is a gifted baker and delivers a product that brings people back to their roots with a comfort food version of this beloved classic. She started her business as a hobby three years ago, but soon attracted customers from all over the greater Houston area. But what makes King Cake so special to McCurdy? “For me it is part of my childhood. In elementary school we would each take turns bringing in a King Cake to share.” McCurdy’s medium size serves 10-12 and the large has 20-25 servings. Her fillings include traditional cinnamon, cinnamon and cream cheese (a favorite), nutella, cherry and cream cheese, strawberry and cream cheese, apple and cream cheese, apple and cream cheese, raspberry and cream cheese, and pecan praline. It’s no surprise that McCurdy is too busy to take part in many Mardi Gras festivities since she is busy baking, but it is a “made with love” sacrifice she is willing to make.
You can message The King Cake Lady on her Facebook page of the same name to ask questions or place an order and pick up is in West Katy. Remember that it has a seasonal availability only.
