Katy couple makes plans to enjoy the new year to the fullest after receiving life-saving organ transplants

2020 has all the makings for a great new year for Katy residents David and Delia Gordon. January 21 marks a new birthday for David as the one year anniversary of his successful kidney and pancreas transplant. Though thrilled to enjoy the insulin-producing benefits of a new pancreas after being a diabetic for 30 years, the year was not without challenges as a few bumps in the road made for a somewhat arduous recovery process.
The elimination of the need for dialysis several times a week was something to celebrate though, as well as some of the food restrictions transplant recipients need to adhere to being lifted, with the exception of raw vegetables, sushi and most other raw foods.
“What I am most thankful for,” says David, “is that I have the opportunity to extend my time with my wife and my family. We have 10 grandchildren and it is very nice to be able to be here with them. As I have gotten older, my appreciation for my family has become even more meaningful for me.”
Family support for a transplant patient is crucial and one of the first things that the transplant team at Methodist Hospital confirms. “You need to have an advocate and someone that is able to support you like my wife did for me.” Delia drove David to the Medical Center every week, was there for him when he was not allowed to lift anything over five pounds and continues to help keep track of the many daily medications he is required to take. In addition, David commends the transplant team at Methodist Hospital for making the experience wonderful. “My nurses, both pre and post op were A-1 and I could not have asked for better care during my time on the transplant floor.”
Houston Methodist is one of the most comprehensive transplant centers in the United States and recently made medical history by performing the world’s first skull and scalp transplant together with a kidney-pancreas transplant.
Recently, David was cleared for travel and they have already booked a getaway that will include their children and their spouses. They would also like to return to Maui, Hawaii, except this time not cut into their vacation fun with having to find a nearby facility to undergo dialysis.
Avid concert-goers they have plans to see some of their favorite musical groups this year. Both are retired after having professional careers in Houston for many years. “January 21 signifies a new birthday for me,” says David. “I am looking forward to a happy new year with my sweet wife and family.
